Fall 2010 Newsletter

It's been a great semester so far for the Beta Omega chapter, this much is certain. We have many things to be thankful for and proud of.

First of all, we would like to congratulate our graduating brothers on their academic successes. Of course this also means we will be losing some brothers, but thanks to a successful recruitment period, we have won 12 new pledge brothers.

Pending their completion of the pledge program, our chapter will still grow compared to last year.

Let's look back at what brought them to us:

A pig roast — An impressive event included a pig cooked whole, cold beer and great attendance. Brothers had the chance to meet potential pledges and feast on the roasted pig stationed in front of the house until it was eaten. Regardless of anything else that happened during the night, the Brandon Yazdani was the highlight. After we finished the pig he put the skull on a hockey stick and walked around the party showing it to people.

Two live bands — Another first occurrence in recent memory: brother Steven Preisman, our recruitment chair, brought two live bands to the house where they played a full set each. This event proved that the Sigma Chi house is a great venue for live gigs and we'll be looking into booking more bands in the future.

An all-you-can-eat wings night — Those able to attend got to see a young man who is now a pledge eat 75 wings. Of course the food was great, but nothing compared to seeing one man eat that much food. Frank "The Tank" Chan will now be bestowed with a plaque in his honour.

Wine and cheese — This term's traditional wine and cheese saw some of the best attendance numbers ever. The event was catered for the first time and all the brothers enjoyed themselves and got a chance to talk to potential pledges. We must also thank the alumni who came and also provided us with wine.

Recruitment is finished and pledge classes are in session with 12 new men working towards becoming brothers.

All the brothers are grateful that mid-terms have, for the most part, finished. Most recently the executive board has put a lot of thought and work into streamlining chapter meetings with the goal that few run more than an hour. In a departure from recent tradition, business has been largely restricted to executive meetings. The brothers on the executive board said they hoped that keeping meetings shorter would help encourage increased attendance, and allow for more concentration on the ritual.

All in all it's been a great term and we look forward to even better things to come.
